SECWEPEMCTSÍN PROGRAM

The certificate is awarded to recognize the successful completion of the equivalent of a one year, full-time or part-time study, with an option of continuing on to the second year diploma.

The diploma is earned with the completion of all courses listed under the Indigenous Language Certificate Completion plan and the Indigenous Language Diploma Completion.

This one-year advanced (ADILT) diploma program is available to graduates of the Indigenous Language Diploma Program and will prepare students to teach Indigenous languages in any BC school setting. Graduates will be eligible to receive the Developmental Standard Term Certificate (DSTC) from the BC College of Teachers.

Certificate in Secwepemc Language Proficiency

The Certificate in Indigenous Language Proficiency consists of 27 units. At least 12 must be earned by completing courses in the Secwepemc language itself. All courses are taught in the Secwepemc language (Eastern dialect). 

INLG 130 (3 units)Practical Phonetics for Secwepemctsin

Practical training in the description of sounds and alphabet used in the Secwépemc language. 

SECW 110 (3 units)Secwepemctsin I

Introduction to the structure of Secwepemctsin language, including vocabulary, word order, and sentence constructions. 

(NVIT course transferable to SFU in lieu of INLG 233)

INLG 134 (3 units) Introduction to Secwepemctsin II

A continuation of the introductory course in a First Nations language, including phonetics, vocabulary, word formation, and grammatical constructions. 

SECW 150 (3 units)Secwepemc Immersion I 

Intensive language instruction in Secwépemctsin at a beginner level. 

[NVIT course transferable to SFU INLP Certificate in lieu of INLG 158]

INLG 200 (3 units)Introduction to Grammar in Secwepemctsin

A practical overview of the grammar of a First Nations language based on linguistic principles for those desiring basic knowledge of language structure, grammatical categories and grammatical analysis. 

INLG 233 (3 units)Description and Analysis of Secwepemctsin I

An intermediate course in the structure of a First Nations language, including writing systems, texts, general linguistic properties, and language family. 

INLG 234 (3 units)Description and Analysis of Secwepemctsin II


A continuation of the intermediate course in a First Nations language, including writing systems, texts, general linguistic properties, and language family.

INLG 258 (3 units)Secwepemc Language Immersion II


Intensive language instruction in a First Nations language at an intermediate level. The course will be based on a designated language to be named each time it is taught.

                      Secwepemc Language                       Proficiency Diploma

This program is for students who wish to acquire high intermediate to advanced oral proficiency in the Secwepemc language, to revitalize their languages in their communities by contributing to restore intergenerational transmission through institutional and family-oriented use of the language, to teach this language in schools or to adult learners, and to develop resources for Secwepemctsin learners at all levels. The diploma can be completed on a full or part-time basis. The Diploma in Indigenous Language Proficiency consists of 30 upper division units.

INLG 300 (3 Units) Advanced Grammar of Secwepemctsin

Students will gain increasing familiarity with, and practical competence in the use of complex and advanced grammatical patterns of Secwepemctsin in order to facilitate accurate communication in that language, in both oral and written form.

INLG 333 (3 units)Secwepemc Language Intermediate Level Proficiency I 

Aimed at building conversational and narrative fluency and proficiency in Secwepemctsin. Taught through a "stay in the language" approach through authentic practice of traditional skills and knowledge, as well as everyday communication in both written and oral form.

INLG 334 (3 units)Secwepemc Language Intermediate Level Proficiency II 

Continuation of First Nations language proficiency intermediate level I builds further conversational and narrative fluency and proficiency in a designated First Nations language. Taught through a "stay in the language" approach involving practice of traditional culture-based and everyday skills in a language.

INLG 358 (3 Units) Secwepemctsin Immersion III

Intensive immersion "on the land" or in a classroom setting led by elder or fluent speaker in a First Nations language at an intermediate level. Exposes learners to a variety of authentic situations where the language is used and spoken in everyday tasks. 

INLG 433 (3 Units)Secwepemc Language Mentoring I 

Intended for advanced learners of a particular First Nations language. Offers advanced vocabulary and/or grammatical skills through individualized practice with fluent speakers (usually elders) of that language.

INLG 434 (3 Units)Secwepemc Language Mentoring II 

Offers additional advanced vocabulary and/or grammatical skills in the First Nations language through individualized practice with fluent speakers (usually elders) of that language.

INLG 335B (3 Units)Analysis of Conversations and Dialogues in Secwepemctsin

Structural and genetic characteristics of aboriginal languages of the Americas. Detailed examination of one language or language family.

INLG 435A (3 Units)Topics in Secwepemctsin II: The Land and the Language

Content varies as required by First Nations language communities or learners. Usually focuses on advanced level topics on structural aspects of a particular First Nations language, emphasizing language learning and teaching.

INLG 458 (3 units)Secwepemc Language Immersion IV 

Continuation of intensive immersion "on the land" led by elder or fluent speaker in a First Nations language at a high intermediate to early advanced level. Exposes learners to a variety of authentic situations where the language is used and spoken in everyday tasks.
